School Ponytails started with one mum trying to find the right shade of blue bow for her daughter's school uniform.

What began with a few bows for friends has grown into a huge range of school, sports and team-colour accessories, helping families across Australia find the colours they need — without having to search everywhere for the perfect match.

I'm Nicola, founder of School Ponytails, and this is how it all started.

 It Started With a Blue Bow 

When my eldest daughter was getting ready to start Kindy, I went looking for hair accessories to match her school uniform.

I thought finding a blue bow would be easy.

It wasn't.

The colour wasn't quite right. The style wasn't right. Or I simply couldn't find what I wanted locally.

So I started sourcing my own.

Other mums began asking where I'd found them, then asking if I could get bows for their children too. Different schools meant different colours, different combinations and, before long, a lot more bows.

What started as a small idea grew into a business.

From Ponytails & Fairytales to School Ponytails  

The business originally began as Ponytails & Fairytales, with a much broader range of children's hair accessories.

But over time, one part of the business kept growing: school colours.

Families were looking for hair accessories that actually matched their uniforms. Schools needed particular shades and colour combinations. Sports clubs wanted team colours. Parents needed faction and house colours for carnival day.

It became increasingly clear that this was what we did best.

And so, School Ponytails became the focus.

Today, we're all about making it easier to find matching accessories for school, sport, faction days, clubs, performances and everything in between.

Children rarely need just one set of colours.

There's the school uniform. Then faction or house colours. A netball or football team. Dance, cheer, swimming, athletics, concerts, Book Week... and whatever else has appeared on the school calendar this week.

That's why School Ponytails has grown beyond bows.

You'll find hair ties, clips, headbands, scrunchies and elastics alongside sports and carnival favourites such as coloured zinc, no-tie shoelaces, socks, temporary hair colour and other team-colour accessories.

The idea is simple: find your colours, then find what you need in them.

With so many Australian schools and clubs using different shades and combinations, it's impossible for every option to sit on the shelf.

That's where our custom range comes in.

You can choose your colours and create hair accessories to match your school, club, dance school, performance group or team.

Some combinations are easy to find.

Some are definitely not.

Fortunately, custom colours are kinda our thing too.

School Ponytails isn't only here for individual families.

We work with schools, P&Cs and P&Fs, sporting clubs, uniform shops, pharmacies, salons and other retailers around Australia.

School Ponytails has grown a lot since that first search for a blue bow, but behind the website it's still a small Australian business.

Orders are packed here in Western Australia, questions and colour-matching requests are answered by people who actually know the range, and I'm still very much involved in what we stock, what we create and where the business goes next.

After years of working with school and team colours, we've become pretty good at finding that very specific blue, green, burgundy, gold or combination you're looking for.
